# Roles and visibility

> What an administrator can see that a teacher cannot, and where the boundary sits.

MESO has **two roles**: an ordinary member, and an administrator. There is no
head-of-department tier, no read-only observer, and no per-subject permission.

## What being an administrator changes

Exactly two extra tabs in Settings. Everything else is identical.

| Settings tab | Group | Who sees it |
| - | - | - |
| Profile | Account | Everyone |
| Account | Account | Everyone |
| Appearance | Account | Everyone |
| Members | Workspace | **Administrators only** |
| Cohort | Workspace | **Administrators only** |
| Privacy | Workspace | Everyone |
| About | Workspace | Everyone |

**Members** is where invitations and signup codes live. **Cohort** is where
activation figures live. That is the whole of the administrative surface.

## What an administrator cannot do

> [!WARNING]
>
> Administrators **cannot see another teacher's work**. Units, lesson plans,
> assessments, resources, uploaded documents and MESO Assist conversations are
> private to the teacher who created them, and there is no view, export or support
> route that lifts that.

Concretely, an administrator cannot:

* open or read a colleague's unit, lesson or assessment
* see what anyone has asked MESO Assist
* read documents a teacher has uploaded to their library
* reassign one teacher's planning to another
* sign in as another teacher

Administration in MESO is about **getting people onto the platform and seeing
that they got there** — not about oversight of teaching. If you are looking for
a school-wide view of planning, it does not exist yet; see
[Rolling out MESO](https://docs.mesolab.ai/schools/rollout.md).

## Changing who is an administrator

The administrator flag is set by MESO, not from within the Members tab. To add
or remove one, write to [contact@mesolab.ai](mailto:contact@mesolab.ai).
