# Alignment

> How MESO ties a unit, its lessons and its assessment back to the specification.

Alignment is the thread running through everything MESO generates: the outcomes
you selected are what the lessons deliver and what the assessment measures. The
product surface for this is called **MESO Align**.

## What alignment means in practice

**1. You select outcomes**

From the specification for your subject and year group.

**2. The unit is planned against them**

The sequence exists to deliver those outcomes, not the topic wording.

**3. Lessons inherit them**

Each lesson's objectives trace back to the unit's outcomes.

**4. Assessment measures them**

The rubric and the assessment are built against the same outcomes, so what
you grade is what you taught.

## Checking alignment yourself

The **Overview** view of a unit shows its curriculum mapping. This is the check
worth doing on every unit before you teach it:

* Are the outcomes listed the ones you selected?
* Does the lesson sequence actually deliver them, or does it drift onto adjacent
  material?
* Does the assessment measure those outcomes rather than something easier to
  assess?

## Where alignment goes wrong

The two common failures are worth knowing, because they look different:

| Symptom | Usual cause |
| - | - |
| The plan covers the right ground at the wrong depth | The **verbs** on your selected outcomes — see [Learning outcomes](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/learning-outcomes.md) |
| The plan drifts onto related but unselected material | The **topic** wording pulling away from the outcomes |

Neither is fixed by regenerating. Adjust the outcomes or the topic and generate
again.

## The limit of alignment

> [!WARNING]
>
> Alignment tells you what the plan was **built against**. It does not verify that
> the content is correct, that a cited reference exists, or that the pitch suits
> your class. Those remain your professional judgement — MESO drafts, you decide
> what reaches a classroom.
