# Assessments

> Generate an assessment against your unit's outcomes and rubric.

The **Assessment** view of a unit is how students are graded against the
outcomes at the end of it. MESO generates the instrument from the unit's
context: the outcomes you selected, the
[assessment method](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/assessment-methods.md) chosen at creation, and the
[rubric](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/rubrics.md) if you have built one.

## Generating one

Open a unit and go to its **Assessment** view. What you get reflects the method
attached to the unit — a project-based method produces something different from
a text assessment, which is why that choice at creation matters.

## Reviewing it

Read it as a draft from a colleague who knows the specification but not your
class. Two things are worth checking every time:

1. **Does it measure the outcomes you actually taught?** Compare against the
curriculum mapping on the unit's Overview.
2. **Are the questions correct?** Dates, quotations, formulae and worked answers
need verifying — see the warning below.

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Check every worked answer before an assessment goes to students.** Model
> answers and marking schemes are exactly the kind of content an AI system states
> with complete confidence and gets wrong. This is the highest-stakes place in
> MESO to take something on trust.

## Assessments outside a unit

Assessment is also one of the eight [resource types](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/resource-types.md),
so you can generate one standalone. Inside a unit it inherits the outcomes and
the rubric; standalone it does not, and you will get something more generic.

## Editing

Assessments open in [MESO Canvas](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/canvas.md), so you can rewrite anything
— questions, marks, instructions — and your edits persist.
