# Create a unit

> Turn a topic and a set of learning outcomes into a sequenced unit plan.

Creating a unit is a guided stepper. Each step unlocks the next, and completed
steps collapse to a summary you can reopen with **Edit**.

## The six steps

**1. Year group**

Drawn from the year groups on your profile.

**2. Subject**

Drawn from the subjects on your profile. If a subject you teach is missing,
add it under **Settings → Account → Profile** — see
[Subjects and year groups](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/subjects-and-years.md).

**3. Topic**

What you are covering, in your own words. The prompt on screen is
*"What are we covering?"*

**4. Number of lessons**

How many lessons the unit should be sequenced across.

**5. Learning outcomes**

The specification outcomes this unit addresses. You can search by outcome,
content, reference or verb, and filter by strand. See
[Learning outcomes](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/learning-outcomes.md).

**6. Assessment method**

How the unit is assessed. Searchable by method or category, and filterable
by category, depth and type. See
[Assessment methods](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/assessment-methods.md).

You can also add any focus or constraints in your own words before generating —
the field reads *"Add any focus or constraints…"*. This is the place for things
like a shortened term, a mixed-ability group, or a particular emphasis.

## MESO Think

Before you generate, there is a toggle for **MESO Think**. It is **off by
default**, and turning it on changes how the plan is produced rather than what
it covers.

See [Fast and detailed planning](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/fast-vs-detailed.md) for what it does
and when it is worth it.

## After it generates

You land in the unit itself, with three views — Overview, Lessons and
Assessment. See [Inside a unit](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/unit-tabs.md).

> [!TIP]
>
> Your progress through the stepper is held as you go, so leaving mid-way and
> coming back does not mean starting over.
