# Get started

> What MESO does, and how to get from a new account to your first unit plan.

MESO is a planning platform for Irish post-primary teachers. You choose a
subject, a year group and the learning outcomes you want to cover; MESO drafts
the unit, the lessons, the assessment and the classroom resources to go with
them, against the NCCA specifications.

You review everything. Nothing it produces is ready to teach until you have read
it.

## Before you can plan

Two things have to be true.

1. **Your account is activated.** New accounts start out unable to plan until a
school signup code is redeemed. If you have been given a code, enter it; if
you have not, ask whoever is rolling MESO out in your school. See
   [Access approval](https://docs.mesolab.ai/schools/access-approval.md).
2. **You have told MESO what you teach.** Your subjects and year groups come
from [profile setup](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/setup.md) and decide what you can plan against.

## The one rule worth knowing on day one

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Never type a student's name, results or personal circumstances into MESO.**
>
> Describe the need instead — "a mixed-ability 2nd Year group" — which gets you a
> better draft anyway. Your text is sent to a generation service in the United
> States, so this matters practically as well as legally.
