# Learning outcomes

> Choosing the specification outcomes a unit addresses, and letting MESO suggest them.

Learning outcomes are the unit of curriculum in MESO. A unit is built around the
outcomes you select, and everything downstream — the lesson sequence, the
assessment, the rubric — is drafted against them.

Getting this step right matters more than the topic wording.

## Finding the right outcomes

The outcome picker searches across **outcome, content, reference and verb**, and
filters by **strand**.

| Search by | Useful when |
| - | - |
| **Outcome** | You know roughly how the outcome is worded |
| **Content** | You know the material but not the outcome |
| **Reference** | You are working from a specification code such as `1.5` |
| **Verb** | You want outcomes at a particular level of demand — "investigate", "evaluate" |

Filtering by **strand** is the fastest way to narrow a long specification down
to the part of the course you are actually teaching.

## Letting MESO suggest them

MESO can recommend outcomes from your subject and topic. Suggestions are a
starting point for you to accept, reject or extend — not a decision. You remain
the curriculum authority.

## Verbs carry meaning

> [!NOTE]
>
> Specification verbs are not decoration. "Describe", "explain", "investigate" and
> "evaluate" each set a different level of demand, and MESO plans to the verb in
> the outcome you chose.
>
> If a generated unit feels pitched wrong, check the verbs on the outcomes you
> selected before rewriting the plan — that is usually where the mismatch is.

## Checking what was actually used

A unit's **Overview** shows its curriculum mapping: which outcomes the plan
addresses. Compare that against what you selected.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Where MESO cites an outcome reference, verify it against the specification
> before you rely on it. A cited reference can be wrong, and it will look exactly
> as confident as a correct one.

See [Alignment](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/alignment.md) for how outcomes tie the rest of the unit
together.
