# Finding your way around

> What each area of MESO is for, and which one to reach for.

MESO has a small number of areas, reachable from the sidebar. This is what each
one is for.

| **Home** | Where you land. Picks up what you were last working on. |
| **Chat** | [MESO Assist](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/assist.md) — ask a question, or think something through. |
| **Units** | [Your unit plans](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/create-a-unit.md), and the lessons and assessments inside them. |
| **Resources** | [Classroom resources](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/resource-types.md) you have generated, and [documents you have uploaded](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/your-library.md). |
| **Slides** | [Presentations](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/slides.md) built from a lesson or a topic. |

## Where the work actually lives

Most of what you do sits **inside a unit**. A unit holds its lessons and its
assessment, and opening one gives you three views — Overview, Lessons and
Assessment. See [Inside a unit](https://docs.mesolab.ai/teachers/unit-tabs.md).

Resources are the exception: they can be generated inside a unit's context or on
their own, and they collect in Resources either way.

## Two names worth keeping straight

> **MESO Assist** is the chat surface — the place you ask things.
>
> **MESO Canvas** is the editor — the place you write and revise a plan.
>
> They are different products and are easy to confuse. If you are typing a
> question, that is Assist; if you are editing a document, that is Canvas.
